The Rimini Riddle

Does anyone remember this? A couple of us have been talking about it in work and searching the web for pictures or videos. It was on on Saturday mornings on RTE and possibly repeated sunday eveinings. It was about two (maybe three kids) who went to live with their Aunt Vera. The characters were puppet based characters and there was another weird sock type puppet "otto" I think was his name. There was also something about some weird painting that led the kids into a fantasy land. It was real Scary shit, I have no idea why I watched it but I cant find anything much about it on the Web! Theres a few mentions on boards but no images.

It was a story about three brothers and sisters whose parents had died. They lived with their Aunt Vera at her guesthouse which was called "Rimini Guesthouse". In the first series, Vera met a man who pretended to want to marry her in order to con her out of her money. There was a picture in the house of some relations of the children who had died by drowning. The characters in the picture could come alive and when they saw that the family were in trouble they tried to help. The children could also enter the scene in the picture.

This was a programme I lived for!!! I loved every minute of it.It was just unique for a childrens TV programme. I was fortunate enough to see it being made one day on a visit to RTE studios. I have video tapes of some of the programmes recorded at the time between 1994 and 1996. Ruari was so cool!!. He was like a boy from Cabinteely and spoke like a 5th year eejit from school- southsoide accent loike you know..?-. A gobshite if ever there was one but reflected reality of a typical Southside Dublin boy from Cabinteely. He played football for Portnashee community school. He cheered on his team at matches "Come on Portnashee Community School, Come on Portnashee Community school" he would chant and feel embarressed that it was not as cool as shouting "united, united...". He also started a band called the "FAT CATASTROPHIES". He lived in a cold attic room in Aunt Veras House where the water tank could be heard filling up and dripping drops of water continually with his small brother Liam, (who was much younger than Ruari)They were either orphans or simply sent to live to Aunt Vera. She considered them a burden on her resources.Ruarai was very diligent and said he had to do his homework or Aunt Vera would kill him. Aunt Vera was a so wonderfully snobbish and her gossipping friend would phone her up to bitch about various stuff. I think Veras friend was played by the voice of Frank Twoomey who was a presenter in Bosco and acted as Veras friend. She wore a big floppy aul ones hat all the time in Dame Edna proportions and style.Claudia Carrolls voice was perfect for Aunt Vera moaning and whinging in that south County Dublin way. The pupperts I think were from Lamberts Puppet studios. They were amazing creations showing unique ugly wrinkles and warts and curves of faces you actually see in some people. They were indeed spookily real. There was also a German Woman called Helga who was either a home help or had some connection with Aunt Vera. Otto, the toy which Liam owned and resembled Grover from Sesame Street in his appearance, had magical powers and as soon as Ruari or Aunt Vera would come in the attic room Otto would stop talking with the little boy Liam and revert back to a toy again. In the end I otto turned nasty and evil and Liam was lost in a fantasy world in another dimension of evil and horror.I loved this programme and want to see it back again. Write to RTE scheduling Dept and request its reinstatement on air or demand thy make a DVD for you. I will as well so the more requests for it the more likely RTE will do a DVD copy if demand is high enough for it

  10. the second season
was about otto and his brother
    who were magical creatures that
disgused themselves and lured children to another creature to be eaten. otto digused himself as a otter toy. there was a magical talisman that the brothers shared
    that broke into two pieces.
like a ying yang symbol but in purple and green.
